Woensdagavond 4 november werd Pater Michael Brehl tot Generaal Overste gekozen.Pater Brehl werd op 7 januari 1955 in Toronto, Canada geboren. Hij was novicenmeester en studen-tenprefect, en vanaf 2002 provinciaal van de gefu-seerde provincie Edmonton-Toronto. We wensen hem alle succes en Gods zegen toe!

The Redemptorists joyfully announce the election of Father Michael Brehl of the Province of Edmonton-Toronto as the 17th Superior General of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer.

I did not actually meet the Redemptorists until near the end of my B.A. studies at the University of Toronto. Through a mutual friend, I was introduced to the formation community at Gerard House – Ray Corriveau, Gerry Pettipas, David Furlonger, Eugene O’Reilly, and others. They made quite an impact on me. Through their warm hospitality and commitment to preaching the gospel, I became very interested in the Redemptorists. I was also impressed by their dedication to issues of justice and peace, and their involvement with the poor. At the time, I had been thinking about religious life and priesthood, but had not met a community which felt right for me. I continued with my last year of university, but kept in touch with the Redemptorists at Gerard House.

After graduating from university, I applied to join the Congregation. Novitiate and Theology studies followed. Under the direction of Ray Corriveau, I attended the Toronto School of Theology with other Redemptorist students. Theology studies really engaged my imagination. I especially enjoyed the study of Scripture. At times, the classes challenged my rather simple understanding of the Bible – but I discovered that my faith grew richer and deeper as I persevered.

Part of the formation process involved getting to know the Redemptorists across Canada. I spent a summer working at Ste-Anne de Beaupre. Living with the French Canadian Redemptorists not only gave the opportunity to learn another language, but also introduced me to another culture with a rich tradition. Ukrainian-rite Redemptorists broadened my understanding of the liturgical and spiritual tradition of the Church. As well, I spent time in Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and other parts of Ontario. While still a student, I got involved in real pastoral ministry – in a psychiatric hospital as a ‘Chaplain in training’, in parish visitation, teaching religion classes to deaf children, and preaching on an occasional basis.

In 1979, I completed my theology degree. My first appointment was to St. John’s, Newfoundland, as associate pastor. I spent four wonderful years in St. Teresa’s Parish. Involved with everything from baptisms to funerals, from youth ministry to visiting elderly shut-ins, from preaching to visiting the homes in the parish, I learned what it meant to be a priest and stay close to people. Over the past twenty-five years, I have been part of a Preaching Team which gave parish missions and retreats; I’ve worked in four different parishes; I spent nine years working with men studying to become Redemptorists; and I’ve served on lots of committees in Canada and on the international scene. Among the highlights, getting to know Redemptorists all over the world holds a very special place for me.

Of course, each of us brings his own personal interests to the Congregation. I’ve always tried to stay active – and I enjoy sports of many kinds: cycling, running, squash, golf. As well, I like reading, crossword puzzles, and movies. I’ve stayed close to my family and I’ve made good friends in different places.
